“Montreal: a spatial investigation is a collection of video and audio vignettes that highlight the links between urban space, identity, and inequality in Montreal. The film is a result of a week spent in conversation at McGill University’s Centre for Interdisciplinary Research on Montreal, addressing linguistic and ethnic divides in the city, the use of public space by women, and how the urban landscape works for and against political organization and protest. Perspectives are offered by professors of social history and communications, a city advisor for gender equality (Conseil des Montréalaises), the regional president of Quebec’s largest labor federation (Fonds de solidarité), and a legal advisor for Quebec’s Human Rights and Youth Rights commission (Commission des droits de la personne et des droits de la jeunesse).
