About the book

Dealing with the risks of climate change and disaster is a fundamentally political process that produces winners and losers, mobility and permanence, relief and suffering. While concepts such as resilience, sustainability, community participation, emergency shelter, and green development are often promoted as well-intentioned solutions, they frequently overlook blind spots and generate unintended consequences.

Debating Disaster Risk brings together leading global experts to examine these controversies and the difficult decisions that arise when cities, communities, and environments are at risk. Through an accessible debate format, scholars and practitioners discuss the challenges of reducing vulnerability and rebuilding after destruction, with commentary from researchers, students, and development professionals from around the world. The book highlights the ethical implications of decisions concerning housing, environmental protection, urban development, and infrastructure recovery.

As climate change accelerates, Debating Disaster Risk offers an in-depth analysis of the dilemmas societies face in preparing for and responding to disasters, encouraging readers to confront the most pressing controversies shaping disaster risk reduction.
