Pour relater l’histoire collective du projet éditorial original, nous avons travaillé conjointement au sein de l’équipe de rédaction — constituée de la Maison de l’Architecture Occitanie—Pyrénées, MBL architectes et de l’atelier de graphisme Documents — pour prendre le temps de relire et d’appréhender ce qu’on manipulait et qu’on façonnait depuis vingt numéros déjà. Nous avons classé, décomposé, analysé, confronté, discuté, évalué, accumulé, filtré, lu et relu. Nous avons sélectionné, composé, synthétisé, représenté, écrit et commenté.
Histories of ecological design: an unfinished cyclopedia

There have been many accounts on the history of ecology and others on the migration of ecological thought to design and architecture practice. This book present conflicting definitions and concepts of architects and designers and the parallel histories of their intellectual positions toward environmental thought from the 19th century to today. It showcases that ecological design starts with the reconceptualization of the world as a complex system of flows rather than a discrete compilation of objects, which visual artist and theorist György Kepes has described as one of the fundamental reorientations of the 20th century. To survey the formation of this field, the history of ecological design is not exclusively examined chronologically, but also in connected worldviews, each rendering evolving perceptions of nature, its relation to culture, and the occupation of the natural world by human and non-human subjects.

L’architecte Jeanne Gang explore comment la pratique horticole de la greffe peut inspirer un nouveau paradigme pour la conception durable. Elle propose d’appliquer la technique de culture végétale de la greffe à l’architecture et à l’urbanisme afin de repenser la réutilisation adaptative et de lutter contre le changement climatique. La greffe consiste à relier deux plantes vivantes distinctes, l’une ancienne et l’autre nouvelle, afin qu’elles puissent croître et prospérer comme une seule et même plante. Cette pratique ancienne est encore pratiquée aujourd’hui pour trouver des variétés de plantes plus fructueuses, plus appétissantes et plus résistantes.

Elina Birkehag: D for Daughter

Deep in the woods in Dalarna, Sweden, scattered among stumps and newer-growth trees stand centuries-old Scotch pines – thick, gnarled, and covered with carvings. The messages inscribed in their trunks are from female shepherds who, from the 17th to the early 20th centuries, would leave their villages to live and work together on the fäbod (summer farm) and lead their families’ cattle out to graze. While in the pastures, these young women, many of them teenagers, carved the date, their initials, and notes to each other, leaving the trunks scrawled with a kind of teenage freneticism, a coded language, an assertion of their existence: HERE WE DRAW OUR NAMES.
