Laureates – OAA – "2011 Awards"

Ontario’s Finest Recognized at the 2011 OAA Celebration of Excellence

Toronto, ON — The Ontario Association of Architects (OAA) had its annual Celebration of Excellence Awards on Friday night at the Metro Toronto Convention Centre. The event was attended by the province’s top architects, building industry guests, clients of the winning projects and those with a passion for architecture. CBC journalist Wendy Mesley was the Master of Ceremonies, supported by OAA President Sheena Sharp, who together engaged the audience and contributed to an enjoyable evening.

This year’s ceremony celebrated an incredibly diverse selection of buildings, constructed nation-wide and internationally. The winning projects provided inspiring examples of Ontario architects exporting their vision and talent. Sustainability was a key theme this year and acted as an integral part of the judging criteria.

Winners of the Design Excellence categories were announced prior to the award show; however, there were three awards announced at the Celebration of Excellence:

  • ‘Best of Show’ went to Cornell Plantations Welcome Center by Baird Sampson Neuert Architects for best fulfilling the judging criteria in the Design Excellence category.
  • ‘Michael V. and Wanda Plachta Award’ was presented to Humber College Centre for Justice Leadership by Gow Hastings Architects Inc. for smaller projects built in Ontario, exhibiting design excellence, and created by a relatively young or small firm.
  • ‘People’s Choice’ by public vote went to Front to Back Infill by Colizza Bruni Architecture Inc.

There were two OAA Honorary Members this year as well, awarded to Rollo Myers and Byron Treves.”
