Coup de coeur – LEGO Architecture series – "Farnsworth House by Mies van der Rohe"

Public invited to build Mies van der Rohe’s Farnsworth House by LEGO Architecture

Modernist master Mies van der Rohe has become second in a new series of architects to be immortalised in Lego as his celebrated Farnsworth House is made available to the public via the toy manufacturer’s website. Designed and realised from 1945-1951, the Farnsworth House in Plano, Illinois is now open to the public and run by the National Trust for Historic Preservation in the US. The bold residential property composed for Dr. Edith Farnsworth some decades ago has slowly become a Mecca for architects, designers and creative minds the world over.

Paal Smith-Meyer, Head of New Business at the LEGO Group said: “We are proud to introduce Mies van der Rohe’s Farnsworth House, a new chapter in architectural history for LEGO Architecture. Our main job has been to capture the essence of this iconic design with our own celebrated icon, the LEGO Brick. We hope the model and the story behind the building will be an inspiration to kids and adults around the world.”

The LEGO Architecture series was initiated as a collaborative effort in 2007 between the LEGO Group and Chicago architect Adam Reed Tucker, and quickly snowballed into a successful scheme with two parallel series – one following well-known architectural monuments, the other tracking the work of famous architects. The latter series was kicked off by Frank Lloyd Wright’s Fallingwater and Solomon R. Guggenheim Museum, and is now being followed by Mies van der Rohe’s Farnsworth House.”
