DESIGN DOMESTIC: AN INTIMATE LOOK AT THE HOMES OF SOME OF CANADA’S MOST TALENTED DESIGNERS

“July 16th – August 19th, 2010
Curated by Noa Bronstein, Professional Program Coordinator, DX and Anne Marie Minardi, Collections Director, DX. Photographers: Daniela Mason – Toronto, An Te Lui – Toronto, Robin Hart Hiltz – Montreal

The Design Exchange (DX) is thrilled to announce a new photographic-based exhibit that presents an exclusive look at the homes of some of Canada’s most talented designers. Design Domestic will feature an intimate presentation of seven Canadian designers and two artists surrounded by the spaces and objects that inspire their work and reflect their personal style.

As an audience we typically understand and critique designers and artists by the type and caliber of projects they put forth into the world. Design Domestic reverses this relationship, endowing us with an unmatched perspective into the personal world of the designer. Perhaps by looking in, we grasp a better understanding of their creations. The exhibit will also serve to explore the universal relationship of domestic spaces, celebrated through photographic aestheticism.

The nine designers and artists will be showcased using large-scale panels featuring photographs of them in their space, along with an accompanying piece of design, on loan to the DX by each of the participants.

The Designers and Artists featured this year are:
An Te Lui – Sculpture and Installation Artist
Andrew Jones – Industrial Designer, Andrew Jones Design
Anne Cormier – Principal, Atelier Big City
Claude Cormier – Landscape Architect, Claude Cormier Landscape Architects
Jason McIsaac – Curator, Interior Designer, Owner of Ministry of the Interior
Martin Kohn – Principal, Kohn Shnier Architects
Micah Lexier – Artist and Curator
Renée Daoust – Principal, Daoust Lestage architecture design urbain
Shaun Moore – Curator, Interior Designer, Co-owner of MADE”

“July 16th – October 10th, 2010
Curated by Anne Marie Minardi

The Design Exchange is proud to present, for the first time to the general public, its permanent collection in Bent out of Shape: Canadian Industrial Design 1945-Present. Spanning more than six decades and covering more than four hundred industrial design objects and archival materials, Bent Out of Shape will illustrate the rapid political, technological, and social changes which burst forth following WWII and the move toward modernity. Items including furniture, housewares, textiles, electronics and lighting will be displayed alongside their supporting archival documents, demonstrating their distinctive design contexts and processes.

Standing alongside the historical artifacts, outstanding contemporary achievements in industrial design from new Canadian designers will also be highlighted in the exhibition. This juxtaposition will allow for the unique opportunity to trace trends in Canadian design, showcasing both past and forthcoming practices and philosophies.”
